Pigs were first domesticated in the Near East around 8500 BC and subsequently brought into Europe by agriculturalists. Ancient mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) studies further indicate that, by 4500 BC, domesticated pigs bearing Near Eastern haplotypes appeared in northern Europe.
